We simplify Zentangle practice to the process of an artist drawing basic strokes on a paper tile. Repeated strokes are arranged together to form a pattern. If we look back at our lives, some might say that our life journeys are so similar. Day after day, we chain together a series of days, and each of our experiences is attached to a chain of memories.

The same is true of celebrations, challenges, achievements, and friendships. All the components of life connect to form ever-changing patterns, ultimately becoming the artwork we call life. The art of life is extraordinary precisely because it is constantly changing, like what you see through a kaleidoscope; no two moments are ever the same. It is a beautiful display that is constantly transforming and shimmering before your eyes.

A kaleidoscope is an instrument consisting of small pieces of stained glass or plastic wrapped between flat, transparent glass and mirrors. These specially designed mirrors reflect the stained glass or plastic, creating beautiful patterns. The stained glass pieces, like the patterns, move, and the same pattern never repeats itself. The kaleidoscope was invented by David Brewster in 1817. He named his invention after the Greek words *kalos* (beautiful) and *eidos* (shapes). What perfect names! We can use this set of words to describe many of the art forms created by the Zentangle method.

Project Pack No. 17 is inspired by the kaleidoscopes in our lives. We admire the artistry in which they form patterns; each pattern is paired and layered with another to form new patterns and create works of art.

Using the geometry of paper tiles, we will guide you step-by-step to add patterns to them, observing how they interact with other tiles to create meta-patterns; these patterns will also change as the tiles are rearranged, like a kaleidoscope. We will explore some interesting tools that will allow us to delve deeper into shades of gray with jewel-like tones.
