The initial goal of Zentangle was to get people creating on paper. When Rick and Maria sat down to design the framework of the "Zentangle Method" and gathered enough information, they realized that getting people to create on paper wasn't as simple as they had imagined. One might think that giving unlimited freedom without frameworks or boundaries is the best way to unleash creativity. However, you'll soon find that the opposite is true. When the creative process has guidance, frameworks, or limitations, it actually stimulates your creativity, imagination, and focus. Because we are more motivated and inspired when faced with challenges or limitations, it was this discovery that guided Rick and Maria to design a series of steps that provide an inspiring structure for unleashing creativity.

The initial steps of the Zentangle method—dots, borders, and shading—are crucial to the entire creative process. The pencil-drawn framework provides inspiration and guidance, inspiring the direction and composition of the artwork.
